The study authors cautioned pet owners to avoid kissing their dogs and to wash their hands with soap and water after petting them, as the bacteria is spread by contact with contaminated animal saliva. .
Infections caused by antibiotic-resistant pathogens are able to evade the strongest drugs available. In the United States alone, about 2.8 million cases of superbugs are reported each year, 35,000 of them have fatal outcomes.
