How is broccoli recommended for health?

Broccoli is known to be one of the best vegetables to strengthen and improve health; however, is this completely true?

According to its nutritional value, broccoli is a healthy vegetable when opting for a healthy diet.

It is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, folate, phosphorus, potassium, and iron, and is a very nutritious vegetable.

Dr. Agustin Landivar explained that broccoli is one of the vegetables with the most beneficial properties for health, where it improves intestinal health, strengthens bones, has anti-aging properties, controls sugar levels, and is anticarcinogenic.

Do broccoli promote bone health?

Landivar explains that bones are living organs that can degrade as they grow, so broccoli consumption promotes bone health by containing calcium, boron, vitamin C, K, and magnesium.

A study by Tua Saude, showed that broccoli is a good source of vitamin K, which is a nutrient “necessary for the production of osteocalcin, a protein that facilitates the fixation of calcium in bones, and maintains bone health in adulthood, preventing the onset of osteoporosis”.

However, they also warned that for vitamin K to act beneficially in the bones, it is important to ingest calcium in the diet.

Is broccoli anticarcinogenic?

Another benefit of this vegetable is its anticarcinogenic effect; however, Dr. Landivar indicated that it is not for any type of cancer, but that it has greater beneficial effects in cases of colon and stomach cancer.

It is also beneficial for kidney health, since broccoli has the properties of sulforaphane, glucosinolates, indole-3-carbinol, and antioxidant compounds that prevent the development of stomach and colon cancer.

Indole-3-carbinol is responsible for decreasing estrogen in the blood circulation, which blocks the appearance of cancer cells that depend on this hormone for their growth, thus decreasing the risk of breast cancer.

Other scientific studies by Tua Saude recommend eating ½ cups of broccoli per day to help prevent cancer.

Some doctors also recommend broccoli to people who have diabetes, insulin resistance problems, or want to control their blood sugar levels.

This is because of its high antioxidant content, improved metabolism, and ability to control energy levels.

Contraindications?

However, broccoli is also contraindicated in some cases. Dr. Landivar advised against its use in cases of stomach problems.

An alternative to obtain the benefits of foods such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, or cauliflower is to prepare them in smoothies, creams, or processed preparations.

Broccoli is also contraindicated in patients with thyroid disease because it blocks it.
