When Father’s Day is celebrated in the United States in 2023
Although not as popular as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day has been commemorated in many countries, including the United States.
Father’s Day in the United States will be on Sunday, June 18, when fathers across the country are commemorated and is usually celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the United States, Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela.
Why is the Father’s Day celebrated?
Father’s Day began to be celebrated in 1909 because a woman named Sonora Smart Dood, the daughter of Henry Jackson Smart, began honoring her father after he raised his children alone following her mother’s death.
For Sonora, her father was an example to follow, so she began celebrating June 19, Henry’s birthdate.
Father’s Day began to be adopted in various cities around the country, although it was not until 1924 that it was established because of President Calvin Coolidge, who decreed it as a commemorative day.
President Lyndon Johnson later signed a proclamation in 1966 to establish the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day, then President Richard Nixon made a holiday official in 1972 and began to be officially celebrated every year.
How is the Father’s Day celebrated?
Although Father’s Day is not officially considered a holiday, there are employers who give their employees the day off to celebrate it.
The way to celebrate usually consists of the family getting together to prepare a meal or going to a restaurant to commemorate fathers and grandfathers.
Father’s Day reinforces the idea of responsible fatherhood and how important it is for the development of children and commemoration of fathers who were in life.
