This warning has also reached the US, where the same decision was made to withdraw some Ferrero sweets under the Kinder license as they are also suspected of being contaminated with salmonella.

In a statement issued by Ferrero North America on Thursday night, it was reported that the recalled products are the Kinder Happy Moments chocolate assortment and the Kinder Mix chocolate basket.

Earlier this week, Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs were removed from UK stores. The affected chocolate was manufactured in Belgium and the recall could be extended to other countries.

“While there have been no reports of this illness in the United States to date, Ferrero is voluntarily recalling the products out of an abundance of caution. This is due to the cases of salmonella that have been reported by customers who consumed these products in Europe, which were manufactured in the same facility,” the statement read.

The European health agency, European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, has already started investigating dozens of reported and suspected cases of salmonella linked to chocolate consumption in at least 9 countries.

Probable or confirmed cases of salmonella linked to chocolate consumption have been detected in Great Britain, France, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway.
