A new survey by the Pew Research Center, reviewed by the news portal CNBC, revealed that half of the Americans surveyed considered China to be the greatest threat to the United States.
At least 50% of Americans surveyed by Pew Research indicated that the greatest threat to the United States is China, almost three times more than those who mentioned Russia (17%), according to a report published Thursday.
According to CNBC, Pew noted that this perception is relatively new, in that “Americans have not always viewed China as the top threat to the United States.”
“When we last asked such a question in 2019, the same number of Americans pointed to China and Russia as the biggest threat facing their country” the Pew report said.
The survey reflects that Americans’ views on China have become more negative over time, especially since 2020. The survey covered more than 3,500 U.S. adults from March 20-26, 2023.
“The percentage of Americans with an unfavorable view of China has increased from 79% in 2020 to 83% in 2023”.
“During that time, the center asked Americans about a number of specific issues, including the China-Russia partnership, which 62% viewed as a very serious problem for the United States”.
In addition, 78% of respondents considered China to be a major threat to the U.S. economy, and 73% of respondents indicated that the Asian country is a threat to U.S. national security.
In contrast, according to CNBC, only 36% of those polled considered Russia a major threat to the United States at an economic level, and 66% of those polled considered Russia a national security threat to the United States.
