House Intel Warns of National Security Threat

Rep. Mike Turner, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has raised alarms over a “serious national security threat,” urging President Biden to declassify related information.

“I am requesting that President Biden declassify all information relating to this threat so that Congress, the Administration, and our allies can openly discuss the actions necessary to respond to this threat,” Turner said.

This call for transparency aims to foster open discussion among Congress, the administration, and allies on necessary responses.

Turner’s announcement, lacking in specifics, revealed that all members of Congress had been briefed on the matter, highlighting the gravity of the situation. The intelligence shared remains under wraps, with lawmakers attending sessions in a secure Capitol Hill facility to grasp the threat’s implications.

Bipartisan Reactions and White House Engagement

While the exact nature of the threat has not been disclosed, Rep. Jim Himes, the committee’s leading Democrat, reassured the public against panic, indicating the issue warrants medium-to-long-term attention.

The White House, through national security adviser Jake Sullivan, has extended an offer for personal briefings to the “Gang of Eight,” top congressional leaders privy to sensitive intelligence, underscoring the administration’s proactive stance.

“I’m a bit surprised that Congressman Turner came out publicly today in advance of a meeting on the books for me to go sit with him alongside our intelligence and defense professionals tomorrow,” Sullivan said during the White House press briefing.

A briefing for key House members is set for Thursday, with Sullivan expressing surprise over Turner’s public statement prior to these discussions.

Nonetheless, Sullivan affirmed the Biden administration’s commitment to safeguarding national security and contending with global threats, ranging from terrorism to state actors, ensuring the American people’s safety.
