Kansas man planted 1.2 million sunflowers to celebrate 50th wedding anniversary with wife

A man planted more than 80 acres of sunflowers in Kansas as a perfect “gift” to his wife 50 years after marriage.

The woman named Renee was surprised when her husband Lee Wilson showed her the 1.2 million sunflowers planted in their fields ahead of their 50th year of marriage celebration, according to an ABC affiliate.

The sunflowers are planted near Pratt in Kansas, the plan to plant the sunflowers came to fruition thanks to the farmer, who began preparing with his son for the “harvest of love.”

“Well, we’re celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 10, and you know what a guy gives his girl on the 50th? And I thought about it a lot, and she’s always loved sunflowers,” Lee told KAKE-TV.

“And I thought, this is the year to plant sunflowers, so I planted her 80 acres of sunflowers,” Wilson added to the media outlet.

According to information obtained by the People, Lee and Renee’s pairing began when the couple were teenagers and went to the same high school.

“She wasn’t able to date until she turned 16, and I called her on her 16th birthday, and that’s when we started dating,” Lee said. “Our first date was an FFA roller skating party in Harper, Kansas,” the farmer added.

After five decades, the couple has starred in one of the most beautiful love stories, “He made me feel special,” Renee told the media outlet.

“It couldn’t have been a more perfect anniversary gift than a field of sunflowers,” the woman added.

With approximately 15,000 sunflowers per acre, the flowers will add to more than a million that will be in full bloom over the next two weeks.
