White House Denounces Attack on Cuban Embassy in D.C.
The White House has condemned an attack on the Cuban embassy in Washington, D.C., where a man reportedly hurled two Molotov cocktails at the building on Sunday night.
“Attacks against diplomatic facilities are unacceptable. We are in contact with Cuban embassy officials and law enforcement authorities to ensure an appropriate and timely investigation, as well as to offer our support for future protective efforts,” stated National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, reported on the incident and shared aftermath photos in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. He described the embassy as being “the target of a terrorist attack” on Sunday night.
Cuban Embassy in D.C. Attacked, White House Responds
“Anti-Cuban groups resort to terrorism due to the moral bankruptcy of their hatred against Cuba and the impunity they believe they enjoy,” Rodríguez expressed in a statement on his X account.
This attack transpired shortly after Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel left the U.S., returning to his country following his attendance at this year’s United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The U.S. Secret Service, in a statement to The Hill on Monday, mentioned that officers promptly responded and initiated an investigation after Cuban Embassy officials reached out to its Uniformed Division shortly after 8 p.m. to report the incident.
“There was no fire or significant damage to the building,” Secret Service spokesperson Steven Kopek noted. “No one is in custody at this time and we are working closely with embassy officials and our partners at DC Police and the United States Department of State on this investigation.”
